Last summer, I finally visited the Scottish Highlands, a place I had dreamed of for years. The moment I stepped off the train in Inverness, I was greeted by a gust of crisp, clean air and the sight of rolling green hills stretching into the distance. It felt like entering a different world, far away from the noise of the city.

My first adventure was a bus tour along the famous North Coast 500 route. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. We drove past deep, silent lochs that reflected the sky like giant mirrors, and through vast, empty glens where the only sound was the wind. Our guide, a friendly local named Alistair, told us old stories about clans and castles, making the landscape feel alive with history. One afternoon, we stopped near Loch Ness. While I didn’t see Nessie, the mystery of the dark water and the ruins of Urquhart Castle perched on the shore was thrilling enough.

The best part of the trip was a day spent in a small village near Glencoe. I stayed in a cozy bed and breakfast run by an elderly couple. In the morning, I decided to go for a hike on a nearby trail. It wasn’t an easy walk—the path was steep and rocky—but the view from the top was worth every step. I could see for miles: purple heather covering the hills, sheep dotted like white specks in the valleys, and the dramatic peaks of the mountains touching the clouds. It was so quiet and peaceful; I just sat there for a long time, feeling completely relaxed.

The weather, of course, was very Scottish. It could change in an instant. One minute the sun was shining, and the next, a light drizzle would start, only to be followed by a beautiful rainbow arching over the hills. I learned to always carry a raincoat and to appreciate every kind of weather as part of the experience.

Looking back, what I loved most wasn’t just the famous sights, but the small moments. It was the taste of hot, buttery scones in a tiny café while rain tapped on the window. It was the sound of a bagpiper playing a lonely tune on a street corner in Inverness as the evening turned dusky. It was the warmth and quiet humor of the people I met. The trip taught me to slow down, to look closely at the beauty of nature, and to enjoy the simple pleasure of being somewhere new. The Highlands left a strong, calm feeling in my heart, and I know I will return one day.
