April 12th, Friday Sunny

The English class today was different. Mr. Li didn't give us a grammar quiz. Instead, he asked us to write a short diary entry in English about "a recent small victory." I stared at my notebook for a long time. A victory? I didn't win any competition.

Then I thought about yesterday. Mom was really tired after work. I saw her trying to rub her own shoulders. I remembered the "Thank you" card we made in English class last month. I took out a piece of paper and wrote, "Mom, thank you for your hard work. Let me give you a shoulder massage." My English wasn't perfect. I even checked the spelling of "massage" in my dictionary. I left the note on her desk with a small drawing of a smiley face.

This morning, I found the note on my pillow. She wrote back below my words: "This is the best gift. Thank you, my grown-up kid." The words "grown-up kid" were in Chinese, but she drew a big heart.

So, for Mr. Li's assignment, I wrote about that note. I described the crumpled paper, my shaky handwriting, and the warm feeling when I read her reply. I didn't use many fancy words, just "thank you," "tired," and "happy.

After class, Mr. Li stopped me. He said, "Your diary entry was very real. The best English comes from real feelings." He didn't even correct my small tense mistake.

Walking home, the spring wind felt soft. I used to think growing up was about getting taller or getting better grades. Now I feel it might be about noticing my mom's tired shoulders and knowing how to say "thank you" in my own way, even if the English is simple. That small, crumpled note in my pocket feels heavier than any test score. It's a real victory, mine and Mom's. Maybe my English diary won't just be about homework from now on.
